Miele Dishwashers

Somat Salt is used to soften water in dishwashers. Water from the tap often contains lime. In order to reduce the lime deposited on dishes in the dishwasher, some dishwashers have a water softening unit which withdraws the harmful lime from the water. Table salt is not suitable for water softening in dishwashers because it usually contains insoluble components which can affect the efficiency of the water softening unit. All Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener to optimize cleaning results. To function perfectly, this softening unit requires special salt. Miele recommends using Somat Salt. Somat is made in Germany by Henkel and imported into the US by Miele.

Machine needs this salt, I have a Miele dishwasher in need of salt. I raced for a while 'with light "salt", and I had problems (exhaust / intake port) and cycle arrest at mid-cycle, and had to be restarted. Since the addition of salt, dishwasher has worked well.
